Your Homebirth Doula
I specialize in working with your family to guide you through preparations for a home-birth as well as Doula support during labor and care in the first 2 hours after birth including helping with clean-up, feeding a light meal to the birthing mama, early breastfeeding support, and those precious first photographs!
I also come back for a postpartum visit to process the birth, answer questions about healing, and provide breastfeeding support.
In addition, as part of my prenatal support, I offer full Childbirth Education class, ideas for comfort and progress in labor, introduction to alternative pain-relief options, and how -to care for yourself and your newborn in the early postpartum period.
Many couples wonder what the difference is between their midwife and doula and wonder whether or not the doula is required.
The duties of the midwife and doula are very distinct and do not overlap. Your midwife, first and foremost, is in charge of the medical wellbeing of you and your baby. And while she is compassionate and loving, she isn't necessarily going to be there to rub your back for hours upon end. You want your midwife to be as rested as possible for the time you really need her at your birth. Of course, some midwives do "labor sit" but really that is what you hire a doula to do. Your doula's role is to provide Emotional, Physical, and Informational support throughout your pregnancy, labor, and postpartum period. The doula will be there at your birth to provide much needed physical support and comfort as well as suggestions for progessing labor. Consider the doula your "epidural" at home! Once the midwife arrives, the doula continues to be your total support and can also lend a set of helping hands to the midwife team if needed. Oh and as an added bonus your doula can take those priceless photos of your labor and birth.
